Bruce's Bio & Tutoring Experience

Hello. I am a semi-retired professional with a gift for explaining things so students understand them. It sounds simple, but I often get feedback like "no one ever explained it to me that way". This is very rewarding for me, of course.

I have tutored math, science, and English in all grades through high school freshman. I am experienced in and enjoy both one-on-one tutoring and small group instruction, with either children or adult learners (especially for GED and ESL). I am happy to help with homework in general, or work on a focused task, like studying for a test or writing a paper, or tutor the student in a specific class subject. I also teach basic computer skills and data processing topics to students of any age, and basic/intermediate level use of software in which I am an advanced/expert user: Microsoft Excel and the entire Microsoft Office "suite": Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Visio, and Access, as well as SharePoint, Visual Basic, and MS Project.

I quickly establish a rapport with the student, using humor whenever possible. At first, I let the student set the pace and drive the process so they feel in control. This creates in the student a sense of ownership and responsibility, which in turn engenders accountability and commitment, and that makes everything go smoother than otherwise. I achieve this also by really participating in the learning experience with the student; that way we become a team, which lightens the burden for the student. Then we end up celebrating successes together and ending every session on a high note.
