Cherrelle's Bio & Tutoring Experience

Qualifications: I have degrees in Business and Mathematics, as well as training through Athens State University in secondary education. I worked with Volunteers of America Southeast as a 1:1 teacher for adults with disabilities in a specially designed office until I expanded to assisting three adults learn life, social, and educational skills within their home setting. Before that I worked as a substitute teacher in three different school systems, tackling any grade that I was thrown in and accepting several long-term assignments working as both a self-contained and inclusion special education facilitator. I have recently resumed my work as a substitute teacher in my home town school district, as well as teaching weekly personal finance classes in a local high school.

Background: Although I've always known that I wanted to become an educator, I did not know what grades or subjects I felt the most at home in. After exploring my options as a substitute teacher, I realized that I wanted to further my skills working with individuals who were part of the special education programs. A local center that provided housing and education for those individuals who were too old to stay in the public school system provided that opportunity. I quickly realized that very little works better to improve another person's education than one-on-one, personalized attention.

Beliefs: The importance of translating school skills to life skills was brought home to me when I began working with intellectually, physically, and emotionally disabled adults. I came across people with a wide range of disabilities and abilities and always strove to help them master the skills they desired. At times it was as simple a desire as developing better motor skills so that they could write neater letters to family members. Other times it would be more complex, such as learning to add and multiply fractions when following or adapting recipes. I do currently provide similar services for children and young adults when requested.

Goals: I now seek to enable each person I work with to achieve standardized and personal goals to the best of their ability. By setting realistic benchmarks and modeling effective learning and study habits, I work to improve life skills in my students, not just test scores. While my primary focus is on helping students improve numerically, I also have a love for literature and writing. I frequently provide feedback and constructive criticisms for students who request proofreading services outside of their classroom.

My affinity for Mathematics at all levels stems from understanding the genuine importance of learning and being able to apply those skills. Though I frequently had to struggle to learn such concepts in school, I persevered and eventually came to love and appreciate the method behind the madness. I realize that math is often a subject that can be overwhelming and confusing for parents as well as students. I find that because of my previous struggles, I am able to relate to my students and help them overcome their hopelessness in a way that many tutoring services do not. When my assignments did not come easily to me, I researched and discovered new ways to learn and teach myself, which led to a greater understanding of the material that I was able to pass on to my classmates. I bring the same dedication and research to every student that I work for now and strive for excellence in each and every session, no matter the subject.

I believe that everyone - parents, public school students, home-school students, and even those with special needs - deserves to learn in the ways that best suit them. If you want to learn more about the changes Common Core standards have brought to your kids math classes, your child is falling behind, or even if you just want to stay competitive in one of the highest ranked schools in Alabama, contact me to schedule your free consultation.
