Emily's Bio & Tutoring Experience
Throughout high school, I served as a tutor to many students in the following subjects: algebra, chemistry, Spanish, literature, music theory, and guitar. In my college career, I assisted peers in Portuguese, Spanish, politics, human rights, and grammar. I frequently proofread essays for others and Rollins College employed me to be a Spanish tutor for a nearby elementary school and a note-taker in Economics. Since graduating, I have continued as an instructor focusing on my passions, mainly in the field of sustainability. At Aprovecho Research and Education Center I have taught classes on soil microbiology, herbalism, and permaculture design. I am frequently caught leading classes in yoga and always have a passion for learning and spreading knowledge. I love to work with students and make subjects not only understandable, but exciting and relevant to their lives. My experience has taught me that one teacher can make you become so passionate about a subject (such as geo-trig) that you begin to believe it may be your life calling to explore that field (and say, become a mathematician), and another teacher can immediately dash those dreams in the matter of a few weeks (and make you realize you hate calculus and never want to see a calculator again). Catering to different learning styles and backgrounds is incredibly important to me, and igniting interest and understanding is my greatest goal.

Emily's Education & Certifications
I graduated summa cum laude from Rollins College in 2013 with a degree in Latin American/Caribbean Studies and Spanish. During my college career, I studied abroad twice in Brazil and learned to speak Portuguese as well. I focused on human rights and sustainable development, studying those subjects in Thailand, Nepal, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. I graduated from the International Baccalaureate program in high school, and finished many Advanced Placement courses that allowed me to enter college with two years completed in credits. Since finishing my undergraduate, I have gone on to complete the following certifications: permaculture design (Lost Valley), natural building (the Cascadia Institute of Vernacular Architecture at Aprovecho), superadobe (Cal-Earth), soil food webs (Elaine Ingham's Soil Microbiology Course), and am a current candidate for professional herbalism (East-West School of Planetary Herbology) and beekeeping (OSU Extension Services).
