Jill's Bio & Tutoring Experience
My goal when teaching and/or tutoring is to get down to the fundamentals of the students difficulties. In Math, it's very easy to just memorize facts, formulas, and use drill to skill method. But for me, it's deeper than that. I want the student to understand the whole process and why it is important. By truly understanding the concepts are then embedded in the long term memory and not just for a test.
Another approach I have found successful is my keen sense of observation. I am able to break down the math procedures in a fashion that makes sense to the students. They do not only get it, but fully encompass the entire understanding.
What makes me stand out is my willingness for a challenge. If a student has been tutored by various others and still is not grasping concepts, then that's the type of student I want to work with. The challenge for me is to get through to the student and breakdown barriers that may have been created along their journey in the math field. To me, understanding math is like a flow. Sometimes along the way there is a dam that has been built, but no one is even aware of it. I like to find that "dam" and chisel away.
For the younger students, I like to make math tangible, visual, and personified. But above all, I want to make math fun! I love math and a great enthusiasm towards it. I want to be able to show and possibly spark that in future mathematicians.
