Jodie's Bio & Tutoring Experience

I have fifteen years teaching experience, and five years experience as a private tutor. In addition to reading great books, my students have been tasked with writing and re-writing essays. Assignments have ranged from writing research essays to detective stories. Further, I like to make the assignments somehow relevant to the students’ lives. For example, when teaching ninth graders Oedipus the King and Antigone, I asked my students to write a compare and contrast essay, where they chose a theme from one of the plays and discussed how it connected both to the text as well as to their own lives. One of the goals of this assignment was for students to appreciate that literature doesn’t only have to appear in the academic realm, but can also be relevant to them personally. I love working with students individually and helping them become stronger thinkers and writers.
