John's Bio & Tutoring Experience
I am an Economics and International Development Senior. I speak English, French and a little German. I have experience in leading Peer mentoring and tutoring in many of my classes. I am part of a club that volunteers at local middle schools to help foster creative and multidisciplinary thought. I enjoy helping younger children learn and will help challenge them, but I'll be there to help them guide through the process of self-discovery. I believe this is the best form of mentoring because when someone has learned something through self-discovery, as opposed to direct lecturing, the student will retain information at a higher level and be able to manipulate it to rediscover new angles, forms and thought-processes of the material.
I also have taught swim lessons in the past to a multitude of children including a few with mental disabilities. I always help my students, but I strive for them to put in an appropriate amount of effort and work into the material. I can recognize when a student is struggling with learning a concept and I will guide them through the material so that he/she may learn and fully understand the concept; rather than telling them the answer off the bat -which does not encourage healthy learning.
