Jordan's Bio & Tutoring Experience

I'm still in undergraduate school, which places me in direct contact with many different styles of teaching, many age groups of students coming in, and many levels of background knowledge. I've worked with numerous age groups - young children to middle school, high school, and some college-aged students - in various activities. These include tutoring for physics, math, astronomy, chemistry, and anthropology. I've also worked in a planetarium and at a small observatory where I gave tours to groups of people of all ages, so I'm able to break complex terms down to the simplest of components so everyone can understand but also can explain topics to knowledgeable people. I've mentored/lead children in athletic activities at fun runs and camps, and at track meets for children and high school aged, so I can work with people in many various situations and under different circumstances.

I want to help the student feel comfortable and confident with the subject, therefore I always support their knowledge, efforts, and enthusiasm. I try to implement topics that interest them into the lessons, so they enjoy learning about the subject area more, and so they find a reason to continue learning. My philosophy is to always empower the student to do their best - no matter their knowledge or background - because they need positive role models, encouragement, and support in their lives in order to do well in all other aspects.

It's also not about the tutor/teacher showing how much they know, but instead revealing how much the student knows and allowing them to work out the problems in their own unique ways while at the same time providing help when needed.

Currently a junior at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo, where I'm earning a B.A. in Physics and a B.S. in Astronomy. After I graduate, I plan to work for a M.Ed and work as a teacher in secondary education at a local high school in Hawaii.
