Joseph's Bio & Tutoring Experience
Hi! I'm Joe. I started my own LLC at the age of 15 and began teaching piano to local students. Since then, I've worked as a Middle School after-school program instructor and spent three years as a private teacher/tutor with two major test prep companies: Revolution Prep and Kaplan, Inc.
When I began my work in piano instruction, I immediately discovered a love for structuring pedagogy and individualizing lesson plans for my students' needs. I also realized I have a knack for connecting and engaging with students who have specific learning needs, especially ADD. My favorite Christmas ornament, in fact, was a gift from such a student.
My work in SAT prep was similarly rewarding. After spending a short time with Revolution Prep, I began work with Kaplan and eventually filled the roles of SAT/ACT/SSAT Classroom Instructor and Private Tutor and tutored students on the Math II, Chemistry and Literature Subject tests. I also have tutored for the Calculus AP exam and have provided classroom support for Algebra II and Calculus AP. I once tutored an SAT student whose family had been told she would never get into college because of her severe ADD. She in fact scored higher than necessary to be accepted into her top choice of art school. In July of 2013 I was named Kaplan's Teacher of the Month for the entire Boston region.
My goal when tutoring is to always make the material as accessible as possible by discovering how a student learns. I, personally, learn a very specific way, and so I deeply empathize when a student is struggling in the classroom. I will present the same material in a variety of ways to uncover my students' learning strengths and weaknesses. Reading, practice problems, visual aids AND discussion are always components of any subject I teach. When it comes to math, I focus on fundamental knowledge, derivation of formulas, and non-standard mnemonics that eliminate the misconceptions and ambiguities associated with many tools for memorization with which your students have been presented in school. I've even written an essay on my techniques for memorizing math fundamentals, an essay which I hope to publish some day.
If your student needs any sort of Math, Music, or Writing/Grammar tutoring, I'm the tutor you should be calling!
