The best tutoring experience that I had was when I was a substitute teacher. The students in the class were in general giving me the typical substitute teacher grief. Not to be rattled because the regular teacher did not leave instructions for the substitute, I asked the students to write an essay, using any language that they were comfortable with, It was the point of the work that I was interested in. So I asked, “What is that you want to do in the future? Not what anyone wants you to do.
I got so many foul language riddled pages that instead of me reading them, I asked the students to read what they wrote out loud. After they were read and laughed at , we began in earnest discussing their goals. It was years later that one of those students came up to me in a Wal-Mart, and he remembered me! I had been in a classroom only 60 minutes but I made an impact on one student. We talked for a while and he apologized for his actions towards me, then he went on to say he went home
and thought about what I had said. Something sank in and he said while his parents didn’t want him to do anything but work at a factory, because they thought he was not that smart and he would be lucky to get a factory job, he remembered what I had said that no one has a right to stop a dream. While he wanted to be a DR. his parents thought he wasn’t smart enough.
He went on to be a Physicians assistant while working in a factory and was planning on going to LMU for his DO within two years.
