I have never officially been a tutor. However, I have assisted many children of friends and family in test preparation and guided them to a better understanding of concepts they couldn't quite grasp. My preferred method, especially with younger students, is to guide them using metaphors they can relate to, instead of instructing them. I feel that this method helps students actually visualize the problem at hand and allows their mind to expand and form a better understanding of the material.
