Justine's Bio & Tutoring Experience

For the past year, once a week, I drove to John Adams Middle School (JAMS) to tutor a class of 15-20 8th grade students in Algebra and Pre-Algebra. I devised weekly lesson plans and created worksheets designed to target and strengthen the student’s weaknesses. I gave the students creative assignments in which they learned about high school graduation requirements and higher education in general. In the summer of 2013 I also tutored incoming college freshman in C++. I co-facilitated a computer science lab, proctored and graded student's exams, and volunteered extra office hours to help students one on one when they needed it.

To me tutoring is more than just helping the students understand concepts. It’s about being a mentor and proving to them that they are more capable then they ever thought possible. Nothing makes me happier then when a student exceeds their own expectations. At JAMS, we tutored students who had the reputation of acting up in class and failing exams; 1/3 at risk of passing 8th grade. But as the year ended students were eager to stay after class and always asked questions about college. They began to see the worth and importance of higher education, and they now know they are capable of getting there.

Most people find that computer programming is one of the most confusing and tedious subjects to learn. And it is for this reason that I love tutoring C++. I’m good at simplifying complex ideas and explaining them in laments terms. I understand that everyone learns differently and at different paces, so I make sure that my teaching styles are best suited for the individual’s needs.

I am currently a second year (going into third year) undergraduate student at UCLA studying Electrical Engineering. Some relevant coursework completed includes: Calculus, Physics, and Introduction to Computer Science (Advanced C++ and Object Oriented Programming)
