Matthew's Bio & Tutoring Experience

While I have never formally tutored, my peers can attest to my passion for learning and sharing knowledge in the fields of history, political science, philosophy, psychology, English language and literature, and environmental science. This passion has been applied and focused in one year's work experience in a university library setting which put the knowledge and learning of our patrons first. I am particularly adept at utilizing digital resources, and I know how to impart analysis and study skills that help students thrive by not just knowing information, but knowing why it matters in the proper context within and beyond the classroom. I also have a particular strength for standardized tests--I received scores of 800 in writing, 740 in math, and 770 in verbal on the SAT, as well as a score of 800 on the Latin Subject test and a score of 780 on the U.S. History subject test, and scores of 5 each on the AP Psychology, History, and Environmental Science tests--and I am confident that I can pass on that talent through tutoring. Finally, I have developed excellent communication skills through my political advocacy work which I believe will enable me to communicate ideas and concepts clearly.

I attended several elementary and middle schools in the Cincinnati area in a search for the best quality education I could find. I attended high school at the Summit Country Day School and I am about to enter my senior year at Xavier University (both in Cincinnati). During high school I had a special enthusiasm for history, and I am developing that enthusiasm at Xavier with a History major. In addition, I am majoring in a unique Xavier program called Politics, Philosophy, and the Public, an interdisciplinary honors program focused on exploring the implications of faith (or lack thereof) in democratic social, political, and economic processes. I intend to pursue a Ph.D. in History upon graduation from Xavier.
