Sireena's Bio & Tutoring Experience

I have been an Elementary Teacher for 6 years. I have taught 2nd Grade and 4th Grade. Before becoming a teacher, I tutored students from Grades 3-5 for 2 years. What makes me stand out as a teacher and tutor is quite simple. I have come to understand that I must learn from my students before I can teach them. Student learning styles are as intricate and unique as a snowflake. They must be reached where they are. When I am able to assess where the student is, and how they learn, then we can go about identifying their strengths. Their strengths will ultimately be used to tackle the areas they do not have as much strength in. I also believe in teaching to mastery. Mastery is the complete understanding of a concept. Strategies are used to provide and demonstrate clarity of concepts. In turn, understanding of concepts leads to mastery of skills. For an example, the concept of multiplication is combining equal groups. To create a situation understanding, I would model what equal groups look like, define them, and have the student do the same. A strategy used to understand multiplication could be using repeated addition. Once a student understands the concept of multiplication, they have the ability to use whichever strategy they would like (Lattice Method, Algorithm, Place Value Model, ect.). The skill of multiplying results from the student understanding why & how it works, and therefore will know when & where they can use it to solve problems.
